Twice a year Canada's shred industry comes together under one roof. They call this gathering the Know Show.
Now in it's 15th edition the Know Show always delivers some of the funnest days of my year. Getting all of western Canada's best snow/skate/surf shops together with all of the brands makes for a lot of high fives and fist pounds. Add a few Pabst, some good parties and unique events around the show and it is no wonder why we have been doing this twice a year for almost 8 years. Have a look at the this years show teaser featuring craft by Vancouver Urban Timberworks.
I decided I'd get a leak of some 2013/14 hardgoods while I was at the show. Here is what I got....
Bindings: Union Binding Co is bringing out a new Union Contact Pro. The binding has a new tray using EVA and a smaller disk which equals more, and better matched flex with your board. They also updated the highback for lighter weight and more flex. Who rides the Union Contact Pro? Gigi Ruf. Nuf said. Also, if you haven't heard about them yet, check out Switchback Bindings for 2013/14. The bindings are totally tool less. You can pop your highbacks off in about 15 seconds for a jibtastic run through the park, and put them back on again if you decide to drop some speed laps. Another cool feature about the bindings is that every part can be purchased individually allowing you to make your own custom color combination. Ride Snowboards drops a bomb with the El Hefe. The high back is made with carbon fiber pieces wrapped in urethane. This makes the binding uber light, and very responsive. To keep the binding extra fresh the gave it an iridescent paint job so it reflects the colors off your board. Boom.
Boards: Rome Snowboard Design Syndicate has a new Boneless deck. The board has Rome's 4 ply Skate Core, which is thinner between the bindings and gives a real skate feel to the ride when turning and ollieing. The board also has the No Hang Ups rocker. This profile is a diamond shaped flat camber under your bindings and continuous 3D rocker around the nose and tail. Capita has a new Scott Stevens pro model dropping in 13/14. The deck, based on the Ultrafear, has a layer of ABS rubber in the construction to dampen the board while smashing through kinks. Each size is designed to fit the kind of riding he does with that board. Shorter = softer for jibbing, and longer = more pop for jumps. It's kind of like a pro model quiver. Stevens chose to include man's best friend in the graphic - each board features an image of his dog. While we are talking pro model's, Stepchild's new deck for the new season is local shred E Man's pro model. The Stepchild rider has been on the program for a long time and has delivered some of the baddest rail sections through the D.O.P.E movies. Graphic choice? A G 'n' R album cover man! Ride Snowboards has a new deck too. The Buck Up is the love child of a DH and a Buckwild, and will be Seb Toot's new rig. The little beast promises tons of pop. I know her parents well and they booth have the Wu Twang. Bataleon's new rig for 2013 is The Boss - I think a pretty good name but it probably should have been spelled 'Bowse'. The board flexes like the popular Evil Twin but has some added kick like the Riot. Arbor Snowboards has an updated Westmark coming with Parabolic Rocker - more rocker between feet and less out towards tip and tail. The board also features Arbor's Power Ply wood topsheet which has less fiberglass and resin, saving weight and the environment. To keep the ride tracking hard they have subtle differences in the sidecut radius called Grip Tech. These traction points give the board control when you need it.
Other: Sandbox is launching a goggle line for 2013/14 and the goggles look good. The frames are designed for a perfect fit interface between the frame and Sandbox helmets for no forehead-chilling gorby gaps, and better overall performance.
