They Take VISA!

This years Quiksilver Showdown Over the City was an amazing first taste of sunny spring. The new location for the course lead to a perfectly situated spectators area. Knowing that the photographers and videographers showdowns would provide extensive coverage of the event, I took it too the beer garden to see who was hangin'.. The 5th Annual Quiksilver Showdown Over the City

Grouse Mountain hosted it's 5th Annual Quiksilver Showdown Over the City this weekend, and it was awesome! Born five years ago , the event has grown to attract top talent from across Canada and the US with the TTR World Tour 4 Star point designation. Over the past few years the event had been caught in bad weather systems but this year that was not the case. The sun was out, and the beer garden was jumping. Another exciting factor about this years Showdown was the jumps. The Grouse Park Crew built the best course to date. Each of the jumps in the double jump line could have been featured as a stand alone Big Air kicker. With 20' tall wedges and 60' decks these kickers were no joke. Here are a few shots I captured at the event.

DC Scavenger Hunt & 24 Hours of Winter

We went up to Grouse for the 24 Hours of Winter to try our luck on the DC Scavenger Hunt. We searched around the whole mountain but our eyes were not peeled enough to find one. The hidden frisbees, if found, were redeemable for prizes in the lodge! Lots of people were on the lookout and the frisbees were being tracked down left and right. Unfortunately I guess I don't have the right skills for this game, but many were very successful on the foggy night!

The Canucks game had begun in the mist with snow-made stands. Runs were fun to rip around, the snow was soft and the bumps were prime! Shreddable all night. This dude was hyped on his find!!

24 Hours of Shred

Grouse Mountain is running the annual 24 Hours of Winter a.k.a 24 Hours of Shred. This is always a good time. They pack the weekend with good events and this year is no exception. Here are few shredtivities to look out for:

  • Terrain Parks: Non-stop Sat-Sun Park Jam 11pm – 1am Park Jam will be open to all amateurs skiers and snowboarders from 11pm to 1am.
  • DC Booth: DC Booth will be located in the North East area of the Canadiana Room! Come and grab some cash in the Money Booth and redeem your earnings for prizing!
    9am Saturday to 12pm Sunday
  • DC Scavenger Hunt: Find the DC frisbees hidden all around the mountain and redeem them for a prize at their booth! Check Twitter and Facebook for clues!
  • Altitudes After Dark Deck Party: We are tenting the Altitudes deck to create the perfect spot to party all night! With a beautiful view of the city, the Altitudes deck party will play host to DJ Hebejebe until 4am, and there will be prizes to be won. Take a break from the hills, listen to some music and get ready to hit the slopes again at sunrise!
I'll be up tonight riding the park and rocking my new playlist. Have a good 24 Hours of Shred!

Oakley Park Jams - Round 1

[caption id="attachment_5059" align="alignnone" width="504" caption="Oakley Night Jams - Round 1"][/caption] The first Oakley Park Jam of the season kicked off  last night in the Grouse Park. Clear skies made perfect conditions for the throw down and I was stoked to see the turnout and the level of shred at the jam format event. Over 50 skiers and snowboarders showed up to rip the park for prizes and bragging rights. The Park Crew started the crowd off at the rail features near the top of the park. The crew gave the park shreds a short period of time to jam on a decided jib to win prizes from Oakley. Good tricks were called out on the megaphone with the 'Banger Siren'. After moving through a few rail features they finished off at the Cut Line kicker. And then it started puking snow. The Park Jams are open to everyone. There is no sign up or limited number of runs and anyone can play. All you have to do is show up and drop in on the feature that the Oakley crew and Park Crew call out over the mic. It is just a session like any session except during the jam the you can win prizes. Come out for the next Park Jam on Friday January 20th and don't forget your tricks!

"Winner winner chicken dinner." Here are a few of the riders and their banger tricks at the Jam:

  • Drew Paxton (skier) - 270 on, Switch Up, Pretzel 270 off on the Flat Down Box
  • Mike French (boarder) - 270 on, Swith Up, 270 off on the Down Bar & Hardway Back 180 on to Back 180 off *holy tech!
  • Adrien Tognko (boarder) - 50 50 though the kink on the 39' Elbow Rail to Front 360 off

[caption id="attachment_5060" align="alignnone" width="504" caption="GPC - Grouse Park Crew holding it down."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_5061" align="alignnone" width="504" caption="Lets squash all this Skier vs. Boarder beef and just ride together. These two are."][/caption]

[caption id="attachment_5063" align="alignnone" width="504" caption="The Cut Line kicker was prime."][/caption]

Now there is a ton of powder up on Grouse right now. So for today, get out of the park!

Quiksilver Showdown Over the City

With the city in view, the Quiksilver Showdown ran full-blast last Sunday. All riders were throwing down and out of the many competitors, the results came down to Zach Stone landing the Best trick, Bobby Balharry placing third, Jeremy Cloutier placing 2nd and Eric Willet with the win. With my t2i in hand and riders throwing down, I was stoked to get to film these guys.  Check out the edit!

Level 1 Superunknown

Aaaah, it's that time of year again. Production powerhouse Level 1 picks one lucky up-and-comer to take their spot among skiing's elite in Level 1's next film. Previous winners have included Corey Vanular, Tom Wallisch, and most recently, Logan Imlach. Check out one of the first finalists, Dane Ulsifer. [vimeo 19419059]

This year's finalists are being released one-by-one, exclusively on Freeskier Magazine's website. You can also view the sickness of the 16 honorable mentions here.

Burke's Going to Alaska!!!

This video just got posted, this is so rad! My good homie and work buddy, was the first official winner of Rome's Ticket to Alaska! This is a North American wide contest, and he won for selling the most Rome gear in all of Canada and the States!! It's an all expenses paid trip to Alaska, where Rome flies you out and you spend a week shreddin and hangin with pro riders as they all come together to get some of the best terrain in the world! check out the site for more info here, Wooo!! So the other night pro Rome rider MFR (babe) and our rep Derrick, showed up at the back door with a big prize poster and confetti, and gave him the surprise of a lifetime. Beers and good times were had. It's all in the footage here.

Oakley Night jam!

You can't find a jam like this anywhere else. As you probably already know, this past weekend Grouse opened for 24 Hours and held three Oakley night jams in one Night! Including a 12pm to 2am sesh. There was a great turnout and the fog rolled out just in time for the most of it. I brought up my camera and got to film the Oakley night jam and take some laps with Shawn Greenside and fellow park blogger Dylan Gillespie. Having an all round good night, I couldn't have been happier with the shots I got. I was also stoked to see all the guys out there filming, look out for those edits coming soon, I know I will. Once again props to everyone who participated in the jam, you guys killed it. Here's my edit I threw together, check it out!
